Before you switch plan: what to check

Fixed or variable price, early-exit fees, conditional discounts and tiers — with examples from suppliers' official terms.

Last reviewed: 5 November 2026

The lowest price per kWh isn't always the cheapest plan. Before applying, check the following in the plan's terms. The examples come from the official terms in force in November 2026.

Fixed or variable price

On fixed (blue) plans the supply price stays the same for the whole contract, e.g. 6, 12 or 24 months. On variable (green) plans the price is announced at the start of each month and can go up or down. A fixed price gives predictability; a variable one doesn't tie you in, but you don't know what next month will cost.

Early-exit fee

Many fixed plans charge a fee if you leave before the contract ends. It usually falls as the end approaches:

  • Protergia Value Balance 12M: €180 in months 1–3, €135 in months 4–6, €90 in months 7–9, €45 in months 10–11 and €0 in month 12.
  • Enerwave Reward Stable Zero 24M: €15 for each remaining month, i.e. €345 in month 1 down to €0 in month 24.
  • ΗΡΩΝ FIX GENIUS HOME 5: the daily fixed fee for the days remaining up to day 180, with no charge within the 6th month.

When we show "you'd save", we deduct your current plan's exit fee if we know it.

Conditional discounts

Most advertised prices include an on-time payment discount: it only applies if you pay every bill on time. If you're late, you pay the undiscounted price. Some discounts are also capped: on ZeniΘ Power Home Start the on-time discount applies only to the first 100 kWh of each billing period. In the comparison a discount counts only if you say you meet its condition.

Tiers and fixed fee

On some plans the price changes with consumption, e.g. Protergia Value Balance 12M: €0.139/kWh up to 150 kWh and €0.219/kWh from 151 kWh. The monthly fixed fee also varies, from €0 to over €10 a month. With low usage the fixed fee weighs more; with high usage, the price per kWh. That's why we calculate the cost with your own consumption rather than an average price.

Eligibility

Check which contracts the price applies to. For example, the DEI myHome Online price applies to contracts activated within the month it's announced, and some suppliers require no debts with the previous supplier or ask for a deposit.

Switching

Apply to the new supplier with the supply number from your bill. Supply isn't interrupted and the meter doesn't change. Before signing, keep a copy of the special terms.
